Last week saw the successful conclusion of this year's Annual Conference on European Tort Law, the 9th such conference to be held here in Vienna in co-operation with the European Centre for Tort and Insurance Law.
As always the conference drew together a large (attendance record-breaking!) audience of lawyers from many jurisdictions, including an increasing number of participants from beyond European shores.
Those in attendance enjoyed short, and often humorous, presentations from each of the 27 jurisdictions present, covering the goings on in the law of tort in the previous year. Naturally, these often prompted discussion and debate on the wider implications and comparative impact of the national rules and these sessions were ably presided over by our longstanding conference chairman Prof Pierre Widmer.
The event was bookended by an enthralling opening lecture from Prof. Ulrich Magnus (Hamburg) and a special session on the topic of wrongful birth/life on the Saturday involving 4 detailed papers from a selected group of scholars. The papers from the special session will be published in the second edition of the JETL later this year.
Those that then remained in Vienna for the closing dinner enjoyed a rare public visit to one of the city's most stunning churches.
Our thanks go out to all the attendees, speakers and participants for making the conference such an annual pleasure and we look forward to seeing you at next year's event!
