Curriculum Vitae
Helmut Koziol, born 1940 in Vienna, studied law in Graz (Austria) and received his degree (Dr. iur.) in 1963. He worked as a research and teaching assistant at the University of Bonn (Germany) from 1963 to 1967, afterwards in Vienna (Austria) and qualified 1967 as a Universitätsdozent (non-tenured associate professor) of private law. In 1967 he was awarded a tenured professorship in private law in Linz (Austria) and he held a full professorship post at the University of Vienna from 1969 to 2000. Koziol has presided over the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law as Managing Director from its establishment in 1999 until 2016 and he acted as Managing Director of the Institute for European Tort Law of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). Further, he was member of the commission set up by the Austrian Ministry of Justice in 2000 which drafted a new Austrian tort law. He was elected as Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 1999 and as a Full Member in 2003; as Member of the Academia Europaea 2010; appointed as honorary professor at the Universities of Graz, Budapest, Beijing and Yantai and was given honorary doctorates by the Universities of Innsbruck and Budapest; winner of the John G. Fleming Prize 2014. Koziol was Member of the European Group on Tort Law, head of the Law Section of the Austrian Society for Banking Research, Member of the Executive Committee of the Society of German Speaking Scholars of Private Law and of the Board of the German Banking Law Association; President of the World Tort Law Society; Elected Member of the American Law Institute. As a visiting professor he was lecturing at universities in Tokyo, Jerusalem, Bratislava, London, Pretoria, Beijing, Yantai and Moscow. Further he gave lectures in Australia, Austria, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and the U.S.A.
