Giannino Caruana-Demajo was born in Malta in 1958. He graduated in law (LL.D.) from the University of Malta in 1982 and was awarded a warrant to practise as Advocate in the Superior Courts in April of that year, after which he exercised the profession in private practice until 1994. He was appointed lecturer in Civil Law at the University of Malta in 1989 and Head of Department of Civil Law in 1993. Between 1992 and 1994 he also served as Chairman of the Board of a commercial reinsurance company. In 1997 he was appointed Chairman of the Committee of Experts on Efficiency of Justice of the Council of Europe, a post he held until 1999, during which time he also served on the Committee of Experts advising on the drafting of the Enforcement Code of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Code of Procedure of Moldova and the Civil Code of the Ukraine. In December 1994 he was appointed Judge of the Superior Courts, where he is Senior Administrative Judge since 2007 and Vice-Chairman of the Judicial Studies Board since 2009.
